Our History
Since 1991, Custom Coatings has covered the southeast with experience, expert product choices, and an attention to detail like no other painting and coatings contractor. We work beyond paint as a one-stop building envelope service, executing all types of coating applications from waterproofing to equipment painting, flooring to roof coatings, interior walls to exterior, for commercial and retail, for industrial, multi-family and a variety of other industries.
How We Started
In 1991, Joe Brindle and his Dad Glenn “Pop” Brindle built Custom Coatings side-by-side: a successful businessman and a kid fresh out of college with summers of commercial painting experience under his belt and a vision of a better painting company in his sights. In the early years, the team focused on new industrial construction, painting new houses, and working for general contractors.
Eventually however, the race-to-the-bottom, highest quality/lowest price mentality of the GC business pushed us to reassess our business model – and the good we could do for our customers. Since then, we’ve built Custom Coatings on education, informed product choices, excellent teamwork, expert technicians, and a dedication to detail that borders on excess.

The Educated Coatings Contractor
We are a painting and coatings contractor with a focus on education. Why? Because there’s a lot of tech in a single gallon of paint, and understanding the benefits and limitations, cost and performance of any coatings product is vital to making the right choice for any situation. So, we study the science, understand our products’ brand promises, and pass that information along to our customers so that they can be better advocates for their buildings, whether they end up working with us…or not.

Joe Brindle
President
With more than 30 years of experience beginning in college and culminating with founding Custom Coatings in 1991, Joe wears many hats, from sales to scheduling, estimating to customer relationships. He’s a traveler, a fisherman, and a husband and father of two.
Patrick Stilwell
Vice President
Patrick joined Custom Coatings in 2010, bringing with him a decade’s worth of experience in the construction industry. Today, he makes sure our operations run smoothly and sustainably, serving (depending on the day) as a project scheduler, estimator and new business guru.
