A water tower or storage tank is easy to ignore, until you look up and see rust streaks, or look down and find flakes on the ground. By then the coating that was protecting all that steel has already started losing the fight against sun, rain, and time.
The good news? The steel itself is usually fine. What's worn out is the coating protecting it, and staying ahead of that is far cheaper than letting it go. The longer a structure degrades, the more it costs to bring back. A quality preventative coating, applied before the rust takes hold, is what keeps a major asset out of the repair budget.
Why the right steel coating system matters
Any steel structure left out in the elements is under constant strain. Water towers, ground tanks, dust collectors, and filtration housings bake in UV all summer, then go through endless cycles of getting rained on and drying out. Without a maintained protective coating, steel simply doesn't hold up. It corrodes, and corrosion only moves in one direction.
There are dozens of coatings made to protect steel structures, and the right one depends on your property, your conditions, and your budget. We'll walk you through the tradeoffs, but here's the short version, least to most expensive:
- Basic: premium DTM (direct-to-metal) acrylics. A solid, cost-effective layer of protection for the right situations.
- Better: epoxy and urethane systems. More durable, with stronger resistance to weather and wear.
- Best: epoxy and polysiloxane systems. Top-tier protection and longevity for structures where you want the longest service life before the next recoat.
There's no single right answer. The best coating is the one matched to what your structure faces and how long you want to go between maintenance cycles, which is exactly what we'll help you sort out.
How do we safely work at greater heights?
We prefer to use large telescopic boom lifts for access. Some companies rappel crews down the structure; we'd rather keep people off the tower as much as possible and let the equipment do the reaching, because it's both safer and more efficient.
Before any coating goes on, the structure gets pressure washed at a minimum of 4,000 psi with cleaning detergents, then sanded all over to abrade the old coating so the new one actually bonds. The prep is what makes the coating last and ensures you get the most value and return possible.

How will you prepare my tank or tower?

How will you access my water tower?
Usually with large telescopic boom lifts. Some companies rappel crews down the structure, but we find it safer and more efficient to use man lifts and keep people off the tower as much as possible. It's a small philosophy that matters: the less time crews spend working off the side of a tower, the safer the whole job is.
Can you repair holes in the metal of my dust filter?
Minor ones, yes. Our crew includes a welder who can patch small holes in a cyclone or filter housing. If the damage is bigger and needs real fabrication, we're glad to work alongside a welder of your choosing, and once the new metal is in, our team encapsulates it for a smooth, finished result.
Can you put a logo on my tank?
Yes. For a simple logo, we'll have a large stencil made and paint it on directly. For anything detailed or multicolored, a vinyl decal usually looks better, and we can refer you to a sign company we trust for the design and installation. Either way, we finish with clear urethane topcoats so it stays sharp for years.
