Not everyone appreciates a painted ceiling. In a lot of ways, the ceiling is one of the most underrated parts of any room or building. You never consider it, and yet you immediately notice if there’s a problem with one.

If you’re interested in commercial ceiling painting, it’s important to know what kind you need and how to apply it. It’s not always an easy task, especially if you own an industrial building. You also don’t want to apply something that won’t hold up to the challenges of a commercial building.

Here’s what you should know before you paint your commercial ceiling.

Benefits of Commercial Ceiling Painting

It’s easy to ignore your commercial ceiling if no problems have developed like wet spots or mold. However, there are many reasons to apply a fresh coat of paint occasionally.

First of all, dingy or dark ceilings can have a big effect on the lighting in your commercial space. This is most obvious if you have a lower ceiling. If the ceiling is too dark, then your lights will have to work even harder to apply even illumination.

In contrast, white ceilings reflect light much better and can make a space feel more evenly lit.

Second, ceilings naturally accumulate dust and dirt over time. Part of painting your ceiling involves cleaning it off, which can help keep this debris from falling onto your workers and customers.

Finally, a freshly painted ceiling can help improve the overall appearance of your commercial space. Many interior designers consider the ceiling to be  the fifth wall  of each room that shouldn’t be ignored. They can add drama or depth to a room, as well as create an alternative look.

Commercial Paint Options

Technically speaking, you can apply the same paint you use on your walls on your ceiling. However, this isn’t always the best option. Not all commercial buildings have the same kind of humidity levels or work conditions, such as in factory or hospital settings.

As such, you should consider what type of paint will work on your ceiling, application methods, and how to prep the space in advance.

Types of Paint

There are a lot of different paints you will come across that serve specific purposes. In an  industrial setting, you will encounter things like epoxy paints, polyurethane paints, and powder coatings.

Epoxy resists corrosion and is durable, which makes it great for metal surfaces and concrete floors. Polyurethane is also durable and works great in outdoor settings. Powder coatings are baked onto surfaces like appliances and car parts.

When it comes to a commercial office building or storefront, you’re safer with more traditional paint like high-quality latex in a semi-gloss or gloss finish. Acrylic paint is a more expensive option, but it’s more durable.

The most common type of paint is flat, as it works best in low-humidity rooms. It doesn’t reflect much light, which means it works well in any setting.

Satin sheen paint works better than flat paint in humid settings, as it won’t crack or stain. It’s best suited for bathrooms or laundry rooms, though you can apply it anywhere you’d like.

Semi-gloss is the most water-resistant, so it’s best used in a place with consistent humidity. The only downside is that it’ll have more gloss than other options.

Paint Application Methods

Once you know what paint you’re using, there are four different ways to apply it.

The first method is  dryfall painting. This method sprays a quick-dry flat paint onto surfaces which dries immediately into dust in the air. It’s primarily used for high-exposed ceilings, and you can sweep up any paint residue with ease.

Very high ceilings may require a high setup. This means that the professional paint team uses lifts and/or scaffolding to reach the ceiling. It also allows for more detailed and accurate work with different types of paint.

Low ceilings that are within reach can be quickly painted with spray paint. This is the quickest option in these scenarios, and you won’t have to worry about the paint dripping down onto your furnishings.

The last option is hand-painting, which is slower and more deliberate. However, it’s necessary if you’re painting more intricate architectural details.

Process of Painting a Ceiling

Before anyone gets started painting a ceiling, they’ll need to assess it for signs of damage, stains, or areas in disrepair. They’ll then prep the area by clearing out any furniture that will get in the way or potentially get paint on them.

The surface is cleaned, repaired, and primed before the first coat is applied. Additional coats will most likely be necessary to make sure the ceiling is evenly painted.

Finally, you’ll need to give the ceiling time to dry. That may mean shutting down your operations for a bit so the paint can dry and the fumes can dissipate.

Reasons to Use a Professional

As a commercial property owner, you should never try to paint your ceiling on your own. Always rely on some professional service to get the job done safely and in a way that prioritizes speed and efficiency.

It’s especially dangerous to try and paint high ceilings, such as in industrial buildings or warehouses. There’s always the risk that you’ll fall or drop items onto other workers.

If you’re interested in a commercial painting contractor, try to  find multiple options. Do the necessary research, such as reading reviews, checking references, and comparing prices. Call up their customer service line to get an idea of how well they communicate and respond to feedback.
